Timeless Magic

Thing to Do In Seattle by Rachel Badgett

Third Place Books, SeattleMaster Payne was my favorite performer when I popped into Ravenna Third Place Books on a rainy night to watch the magic show. The mischievous, robust man was an actor – pulling magic tricks plus jokes and foibles that kept us all giggling.

This monthly magic show is just one delight found in the 2 story brick building on the corner of 65th and 20th. The second level is the used book store, where they help you say goodbye to your used books via cash, but you’ll just find more to buy in their packed shelves! Sit a bit in a the designated quiet corner to read or connect to Wi-Fi, or mozy into Vios Cafe. Attend author events. Join the book club. Take the kids to Saturday story time – 11 a.m. And for more thrills, head downstairs to the pub – a lively place that can be reached through the  rustic wooden door at the street front or down the stairs from the cafe. At the pub you can more than visit. Monthly they have Science on Tap - a discussion group about science and technology.

The next magic show – get there early because there weren’t many seats left once the 40 or so people showed up – happens February 13th. 7p once a month on Monday! If it’s anything like January’s, you’ll see a few different performers capture you magically by multiplying marshmallows, pulling a guests $20 bill from the middle of a lemon, or a big bottle of beer pulled out of a small paper sack – that was Master Payne’s wonder. And if you don’t want to share the fun with a crowd at the bookstore, you can book Master Payne for events. I’d say he’s well worth it! From his 30 years of performing at Camlann Medieval Village in Carnation – among many other places - he brings an enchanting act to behold!
